Aglianico del Vulture DOC is the historic red-wine denomination of the Vulture district in northern Basilicata, a landscape shaped by the extinct Monte Vulture volcano. Vineyards occupy its slopes and the surrounding hills, often at elevated, well-ventilated sites. Volcanic ash, tuff and weathered lava, combined with soils of varying depth and occasional clay content, create a complex geological mosaic. These conditions encourage gradual ripening, mineral definition and a firm, ageworthy structure. The climate combines Mediterranean light with the continental influence of inland southern Italy; cool nights and marked diurnal shifts help preserve acidity and allow a measured development of phenolic maturity.
Aglianico is the central grape of the denomination and gives the wine its distinctive identity. It buds relatively late and ripens late, making a long growing season essential. In the vineyard, site selection, control of vine vigour, attentive canopy management and a selective, generally late harvest are fundamental. The aim is to achieve complete ripeness in its small, thick-skinned berries while retaining natural freshness and the variety’s characteristic tannic framework.
Vinification follows a red-wine approach with fermentation on the skins; the length and intensity of extraction are adapted to the vintage, fruit maturity and intended ageing trajectory. Aglianico produces deeply coloured wines with firm, often youthful tannins, pronounced acidity and notable capacity for development. Maturation in oak, traditionally often in larger vessels, can soften the tannic texture and encourage spicy, tobacco-like, woodland and balsamic nuances alongside dark-fruit aromas. Bottle ageing forms an important element of the style.
Viticulture around Vulture has deep roots. Ancient origins have been proposed for Aglianico, while its enduring connection with Basilicata is expressed through a long local tradition of cultivation and cellar work. The DOC safeguards this union of volcanic terrain, late-ripening grape and patient maturation.
