Calabria IGT is a protected geographical indication encompassing the whole of Calabria, expressing the diversity of a wine region shaped by mountain ranges, hills and two coastlines. The Pollino massif in the north, the Sila plateau, the Serre and the Aspromonte influence altitude, aspect and air circulation. The Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas temper coastal conditions, while inland sites experience more marked diurnal and seasonal variation. Soils are equally varied, ranging from granitic and metamorphic formations to clay-limestone ground, sandy deposits, alluvial soils and iron-rich substrates.
The designation covers still white, red and rosé wines, as well as sparkling, passito and fortified styles when produced in accordance with the relevant technical provisions. Indigenous grapes are central to its identity: Gaglioppo, Greco Nero, Magliocco and Nerello Cappuccio are important red varieties, while Greco Bianco, Mantonico, Pecorello, Guardavalle and Malvasia contribute to the white repertoire. Depending on origin and intended style, these may be complemented by other traditional or international varieties authorised in Calabria. Variety selection is closely linked to local conditions: later-ripening red grapes suit sunny, airy slopes, while white grapes can retain freshness in elevated vineyards or sites more strongly influenced by the sea.
Viticulture combines historic bush-trained vines in some areas with modern trellised systems. Canopy management, carefully considered cover crops or soil cultivation, and precise harvest timing are used to preserve aromatic definition, acidity and phenolic maturity. In the cellar, techniques range from temperature-controlled stainless-steel fermentation for focused whites and rosés to extended skin contact and maturation in wood or neutral vessels for more structured reds. Calabria’s vine-growing history reaches back to the era of ancient Greek settlement. Today, Calabria IGT offers a flexible framework in which this inherited grape heritage can be interpreted through contemporary expressions while retaining a clear connection to the region’s Mediterranean and mountainous landscape.
