Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva DOCG is an ageworthy red wine from the Alta Murgia of northern Puglia, a landscape of limestone plateaus, stony shallow soils and gently rolling elevations. The denomination is shaped by the nearby Adriatic, whose air currents temper Mediterranean warmth. Marked day-to-night temperature shifts, persistent winds and elevated vineyards encourage gradual ripening, preserve freshness and favour the development of ripe, firmly woven tannins. The frequently calcareous and clay-limestone soils, rich in stones, compel vines to root deeply and contribute tension, mineral nuance and structural definition to the wines.
Nero di Troia, also known as Uva di Troia, is the essential grape of the denomination and must account for at least 65 percent of the blend. It gives deeply coloured, tannic wines marked by dark berries, sour cherry, violet and Mediterranean herbs, evolving toward tobacco, leather and spice with bottle development. Other authorised red grapes may complement it, notably Montepulciano, which can add fruit depth, suppleness and further colour. Vineyard work aims at balanced vine growth and complete phenolic ripeness, with harvesting timed to bring fruit expression, acidity and tannin maturity into harmony.
Following destemming and fermentation on skins, extraction is managed carefully to transform Nero di Troia’s natural power into polished tannins suited to long evolution. The Riserva designation requires at least two years of ageing, including a minimum of twelve months in wood. Maturation in large casks or smaller wooden vessels develops layered spicy and balsamic tones while preserving the grape’s distinctive identity. DOCG status recognises the longstanding winegrowing culture surrounding Castel del Monte, where contemporary winemaking places the indigenous grape and the austere limestone terroir at the centre of the style.
