Colli di Luni DOC occupies the easternmost corner of Liguria and extends across the regional boundary into the Tuscan province of Massa-Carrara. Its vineyards lie on the hills between the Ligurian Sea, the lower Magra valley, the foothills of the Apennines and the Apuan Alps. This setting creates a bright, breezy climate: maritime winds temper summer warmth, while elevation and the nearby mountains bring useful day-to-night temperature shifts. Soils are notably varied, ranging from alluvial deposits in the valley to sand, gravel, clay, limestone, sandstone and stony hillside sites.
Vermentino is the denomination’s defining white grape. In the varietal Colli di Luni Vermentino, it commonly expresses citrus, white flowers, Mediterranean herbs and a distinctive saline, mineral edge. The Bianco category may also draw on locally established white varieties, including Trebbiano Toscano and Albarola alongside Vermentino. For red wines, Sangiovese is central, with Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and other permitted local varieties contributing according to the style. The Rosso and Riserva wines combine lively acidity with red-fruit tones, herbal nuance and a subtle earthy framework.
Vines are often planted on sunny slopes, in some places on terraces, where vineyard work calls for attentive canopy management and careful hand harvesting. Retaining acidity, achieving measured ripeness and protecting grape health are essential goals. White wines are generally softly pressed and fermented under temperature control in stainless steel; time on fine lees may add texture and depth. A brief period of skin contact can also be used for Vermentino when freshness and varietal clarity remain paramount. Red wines are made through maceration and fermentation with the skins, then matured in inert vessels or wood according to the intended expression.
The name Luni recalls the ancient Roman settlement and its historic port. Viticulture on these slopes belongs to a long agricultural tradition shaped by the meeting of Ligurian coastal culture and the Tuscan hinterland.
