Colli Piacentini DOC covers the vine-clad hills south of Piacenza, set between the Po Plain and the first ridges of the Ligurian-Emilian Apennines. The Trebbia, Nure, Arda and Tidone valleys divide the territory into slopes with varied exposures. Limestone-rich clay marls, sandstone, fossil marine sediments and, in places, more gravelly soils create a diverse geological mosaic. Altitude, persistent air movement and marked day-night temperature shifts help preserve acidity and aromatic definition. The climate combines the continental influence of the plain with cooler currents descending from the Apennines.
The denomination protects a broad range of local and long-established grape varieties. Barbera and Croatina are the essential grapes of Gutturnio, producing red wines that may be still or gently sparkling, distinguished by colour, fruit and lively freshness. Croatina also shapes the Bonarda style. Leading white varieties include Ortrugo, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica and Trebbianino Val Trebbia, the local name for Sauvignon. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica brings floral and spicy perfume, while Ortrugo contributes tension and restrained citrus character. Monterosso Val d’Arda is a historic white blend in which several varieties meet. Vin Santo di Vigoleno is made from carefully dried white grapes and undergoes slow maturation, often in small wooden casks, developing concentration and layered complexity.
Viticulture favours well-exposed slopes and canopy management aimed at balancing sunlight with airflow around the bunches. Grapes may be picked early to retain brightness or later to obtain greater ripeness and structure, according to the intended style. White wines are generally gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures. For reds, maceration time is adjusted to shape colour and tannin. Alongside still wines, frizzante and spumante styles are central to local tradition, with bubbles obtained through a second fermentation in tank or bottle. Recognised in 1967, the DOC brings together a longstanding wine culture shaped by its valleys and its notably diverse range of wines.
