Elba Aleatico Passito DOCG is a sweet wine from the island of Elba in the Tuscan Archipelago. Its identity rests on the meeting of a Mediterranean island environment and Aleatico, an intensely aromatic red grape belonging to the Muscat family. Vineyards occur on diverse geological formations, including granite, schist, iron-rich rocks, and sandy-clayey deposits. Sea breezes temper the warmth, keep bunches ventilated, and, together with strong sunlight and limited rainfall, shape ripening. Many sites are stony hillside terraces, where cultivation demands attentive and largely manual vineyard work.
Aleatico is the defining grape of the denomination, while other permitted red varieties may play a supporting role. It produces small, deeply coloured berries with distinctive notes of rose, violet, red and dark berries, candied peel, and spice. The selection of perfectly sound grapes at full aromatic maturity is essential. After harvest, the fruit is traditionally laid out to dry or withered in well-aired spaces. This passito stage concentrates sugars, acidity, colour, and aromatic precursors, giving the variety its characteristic depth while requiring close control to ensure even drying and preserve freshness.
The withered grapes are gently destemmed and pressed, then fermented slowly in a manner designed to retain part of their natural sweetness. Depending on the cellar approach, brief skin contact can reinforce colour and aromatic complexity. Ageing is intended to integrate concentration with lively acidity, supple tannins, and the unmistakable floral signature of Aleatico. Viticulture on Elba has ancient roots, shaped by Etruscan, Roman, and later Tuscan traditions. Aleatico Passito became an emblematic expression of this island heritage and was subsequently recognised as a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin.
