Falerio DOC is a white-wine denomination of the southern Marche, shaped by the hilly country between the Adriatic coast and the first foothills of the Apennines. Vineyards occupy rolling ridges, sheltered valleys and slopes with varied exposures. Clay and limestone soils, sometimes interspersed with sandy components, interact with maritime breezes and cooler currents from inland. Sunny, warm days encourage full ripening, while nocturnal temperature shifts can preserve aromatic definition and lively acidity.
The denomination is founded on a traditional regional white blend. Trebbiano commonly provides the structural backbone, contributing freshness, a linear palate and restrained fruit expression. Passerina brings floral tones, citrus character and a finely etched acidity. Pecorino adds body, aromatic concentration and notes that may recall yellow fruit and Mediterranean herbs. Other permitted non-aromatic white grapes may complete the blend, allowing growers to interpret both vintage conditions and individual vineyard sites.
Viticulture focuses on managing the canopy carefully, maintaining airflow around the bunches and harvesting sound fruit with precision. Since the varieties ripen at different times, they are often picked and vinified separately. Gentle pressing is generally followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, a method intended to retain primary aromas and brightness. The component wines are then assembled into the final blend. A period on fine lees may be used to build texture and complexity while preserving the denomination’s clear, energetic profile.
The name Falerio recalls ancient Falerio Picenus and the long continuity of viticulture in this part of the Marche. The modern DOC translates that historical identity into a contemporary style of white wine, where local varieties, hillside origins and careful cellar work are central to the expression.
