Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino DOC occupies the eastern Ligurian coast around the Gulf of Tigullio, where the sea meets a sharply folded succession of slopes and small valleys. Vineyards are planted on narrow terraces, often supported by dry-stone walls, as well as in more sheltered inland sites close to the coast. The Mediterranean climate is moderated by the Ligurian Sea: breezes, intense light and the quick drainage of frequently stony soils shape the growing environment. Differences in altitude, aspect and geology create a detailed mosaic of cooler, wind-exposed plots and warmer pockets.
The principal white grapes are Bianchetta Genovese and Vermentino. Bianchetta Genovese, a historic local variety, typically contributes pale colour, delicate aromatics, restrained body and bright freshness. Vermentino often brings citrus character, Mediterranean herb notes, firmer texture and a distinctive saline energy. Moscato Bianco also has a role in the denomination’s aromatic expressions. Among red grapes, Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese are central, while Dolcetto and other permitted traditional varieties may complement blends. Ciliegiolo commonly lends fragrant fruit and supple contours; Sangiovese adds freshness, savoury nuance and structural definition.
Viticulture on the steep coastal terrain calls for close manual attention. Pruning and canopy management are adapted to encourage air circulation after rainfall while preserving sufficient shade during hot periods. Harvesting is commonly staggered according to elevation, exposure and grape variety. White wines are generally gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures in inert vessels to retain aromatic clarity and tension; lees ageing may be used to broaden texture. Rosé wines are made through brief skin contact, while reds undergo controlled maceration and measured extraction to preserve fruit and balance. The wine history of Tigullio is inseparable from coastal settlements, monastic cultivation, maritime communities and the long construction and maintenance of terraced hillsides. The denomination expresses this Ligurian heritage through white, rosé, red and varietal wines rooted in a dramatic maritime landscape.
