Loazzolo DOC is a sweet passito wine from the municipality of Loazzolo, in the southern hills of the Asti area in Piedmont. Its vineyards belong to an intricate landscape of valleys, wooded ridges and sunlit slopes on the edge of the Langhe. Sites are generally airy and well exposed, with soils in which calcareous marl, clay and sand are interwoven. Altitude, marked day-night temperature shifts and a long growing season encourage gradual aromatic ripening while preserving the freshness essential to a balanced sweet wine.
The denomination is dedicated to Moscato Bianco. In Loazzolo, this historic Piedmontese grape can combine floral and citrus notes with sage, dried apricot, honey and delicate spice. Vineyard work is especially exacting: fruit is allowed to reach full physiological ripeness, then selected by hand so that only sound, perfectly ripe bunches are destined for drying. The open hill environment, together with dry air currents, supports the natural concentration of the berries.
Appassimento is the defining feature of Loazzolo. After harvest, selected grapes are gently dried, allowing water to evaporate slowly and concentrating sugars, acidity, aromatic compounds and extract. Vinification requires restraint and precision because must from dried Moscato grapes is particularly rich and sensitive. A carefully managed, often unhurried fermentation aims to retain varietal fragrance while leaving a harmonious natural sweetness. The wine then undergoes extended maturation, commonly involving a period in wood followed by further bottle ageing. This evolution integrates fruit, spice and balsamic nuances, giving the passito depth and notable ageing potential.
The denomination grows out of the local tradition of drying aromatic white grapes to create wines of concentration without losing vitality. Loazzolo preserves this artisanal approach and offers a distinctive expression of Moscato Bianco: a sweet wine shaped by Piedmont’s hill terroir, patient drying and long maturation.
