Lugana DOC is a cross-regional appellation on the southern shores of Lake Garda, extending between Lombardy and western Veneto. Its landscape was shaped by glaciers: gentle morainic hills give way to flatter land, and dense, clay-rich soils of glacial origin are especially distinctive. These soils retain water and release it gradually, contributing a recognizable combination of tension, structure and a mineral, saline impression. Lake Garda moderates climatic extremes, while breezes and marked day–night temperature variation encourage slow, balanced ripening.
Turbiana is the defining grape of Lugana, an indigenous white variety long associated with Trebbiano di Soave. It combines vibrant acidity with firm substance and, at times, a discreet phenolic grip, as well as notable capacity to evolve in bottle. In youth, it often suggests citrus, white flowers, herbs and a subtle almond note. With maturation, its profile can develop toward riper yellow fruit, balsamic tones, flint and earthy complexity.
Vines are cultivated across parcels with differing aspects, and careful canopy management is essential to maintain air circulation, healthy fruit and controlled ripening. Harvesting is commonly carried out in successive passes according to soil, exposure and the desired style. For classic still Lugana, grapes are generally pressed gently and fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel, preserving freshness and varietal definition. Selected lots may mature on fine lees or in neutral oak vessels, adding texture and depth without obscuring Turbiana’s character.
Alongside the youthful dry style, the denomination includes Superiore, Riserva, sparkling wine and Vendemmia Tardiva. These expressions demonstrate the versatility of the grape, ranging from incisive and citrus-led wines to more layered, mature and concentrated interpretations. Lugana’s history is closely linked to the ancient settlement and winegrowing traditions around Lake Garda. Its name recalls the Selva Lucana, a once wooded and marshy landscape that historically characterized this area.
