Offida DOCG lies in the southern part of Marche, within a hilly landscape shaped by Adriatic influences and the foothills of the Apennines. The denomination includes selected municipalities in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo. Vineyards occupy slopes with varied exposures and elevations, on a mosaic of clay, limestone, sand and marine sedimentary soils. The nearby sea promotes air circulation and moderates conditions, while cooler currents from inland heighten day-night temperature variation. Together, these factors encourage gradual aromatic ripening while helping the grapes retain freshness.
The denomination is particularly identified with Pecorino and Passerina, two historic white varieties of the central Adriatic. Offida Pecorino and Offida Passerina are made predominantly from their respective named grapes, with permitted complementary varieties playing only a supporting role. Pecorino commonly gives concentrated, textured wines with vivid acidity, herbal and citrus nuances, and a mineral finish. Passerina generally offers a fragrant, bright profile of floral notes, citrus and yellow fruit, with a finer, more linear texture. The Passerina category may also be produced as sparkling wine or passito. Montepulciano is the defining grape of Offida Rosso and Rosso Riserva, contributing colour, substance, ripe fruit character and spicy depth.
Vineyard management on the slopes is geared to balanced sunlight exposure and ventilation. Careful canopy work, site-appropriate cover crops and selective harvesting support healthy fruit and even ripeness. White wines are generally fermented under controlled temperatures, often in stainless steel, to preserve aromatic clarity and tension; maturation on fine lees may add texture and complexity. For reds, maceration and fermentation on the skins are followed by maturation in suitable vessels, with a longer ageing period for Riserva. Recognised as a DOCG in 2011, Offida brings together a long local winegrowing tradition and the renewed focus on distinctive regional grapes.
