Ormeasco di Pornassio DOC belongs to the upper Arroscia Valley, in the inland mountains of western Liguria. Its vineyards occupy steep slopes, frequently arranged on narrow terraces retained by dry-stone walls. This is a distinctly transitional landscape: Mediterranean influences rise from the coast, while cooler currents arrive from the nearby Apennines. Marked day-to-night temperature variation and a long growing season help preserve fragrance and acidity. Soils are generally lean and well drained, with varying proportions of limestone, clay, sand and rocky material, encouraging gradual ripening and wines of clear territorial definition.
The denomination is centred on Ormeasco, a local biotype of Dolcetto that has been rooted in the valley for centuries. Its name recalls the historic links between Liguria and the Piedmontese area around Ormea. The variety is well suited to the elevated, ventilated sites and to the changing conditions of mountain viticulture. Vines are commonly tended in fragmented hillside parcels, where canopy management and careful selection at harvest are essential for achieving even ripeness and healthy fruit. Other permitted red varieties may play a minor supporting role.
The traditional red wine is made through fermentation on the skins, with maceration tailored to the vintage and the desired balance of colour, tannin and aroma. Maturation may take place in inert vessels or, for some wines, with measured use of wood so that the identity of Ormeasco remains central. The wines commonly combine ruby colour with sour-cherry and plum notes, floral hints, subtle spice and a lively, mountain-valley freshness. The Superiore style is shaped for added depth and evolution. Sciac-trà is the denomination’s pale rosé expression, made with brief skin contact, while Passito is produced from carefully dried grapes. Together, these styles express a Ligurian red-wine tradition poised between alpine terrain and the Mediterranean.
