Piave Malanotte, also known as Malanotte del Piave, is a historic red-wine denomination from eastern Veneto, shaped by the presence of the Piave River. Its vineyard landscape rests on soils laid down by the river: gravel, sand, silt and clay occur in varying combinations, producing sites with good drainage and, in places, a distinct mineral character. The climate combines continental conditions with moderating Adriatic influences. Warm summers encourage full ripening, while diurnal variation and cool autumn nights help retain the acidity and savoury definition of the grapes.
Raboso Piave is the defining variety. This ancient indigenous grape has small, thick-skinned berries and is renowned for deep colour, firm tannins and naturally high acidity. Depending on the permitted blend, other local red grapes, notably Raboso Veronese, may play a complementary role. Vineyard work requires attentive canopy management and careful regulation of crop load so that the fruit ripens evenly and remains sound. Harvesting is selective, since both fresh fruit for structure and parcels intended for drying are required.
The essential feature of Malanotte is the traditional drying of a prescribed portion of the harvested grapes. This process concentrates sugars, extract and aromatic precursors while preserving Raboso’s characteristic acid backbone. The dried fruit is fermented with, or incorporated into, wine or must from freshly harvested grapes. Extended skin contact is commonly used to draw colour and tannin from the skins, and controlled fermentation is crucial to balancing power with precision.
The wine then undergoes lengthy maturation, intended to soften its naturally assertive tannic frame. Ageing in wooden vessels of different sizes is widely used to allow gradual development without masking the grape’s dark-fruit and spice character. Malanotte grew out of the rural traditions of the Piave area, where drying Raboso grapes helped create wines of greater concentration and durability. The denomination now preserves that inherited technique through a vinification style focused on structure, freshness and long development.
