Riviera del Garda Bresciano DOC covers the wine country along the western and south-western shores of Lake Garda, in the province of Brescia. The lake shapes a bright, temperate environment: its mass of water moderates winter cold, encourages air circulation and lengthens the ripening season. Vineyards extend across gentle morainic hills, terraces and plains, on soils of calcareous debris, gravel, sand, clay and glacial deposits. This varied setting brings together freshness, aromatic clarity and generally supple structure.
The local identity of the red and rosé wines rests above all on Groppello, a group of traditional varieties including Groppello Gentile, Groppello di Mocasina and Groppello di Santo Stefano. Depending on the style, other long-established grapes such as Marzemino, Sangiovese and Barbera may complete the blend. Groppello commonly gives a pale hue, fragrances of red berries, flowers and spice, and fine-grained tannins. Chiaretto is made through brief skin contact, preserving its delicate colour, lively acidity and distinctive perfume. In the white wines, Trebbiano and Riesling, including Riesling Italico, play an important role, producing wines that are restrained, fragrant and marked by the lake-influenced climate.
Viticulture takes advantage of the exposure of hillside sites and focuses on balanced canopies, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while remaining healthy. Harvest decisions are guided by ripeness and the intended style; for rosé, the timing of pressing is especially important. Whites and rosés are generally fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to retain fruit definition and freshness. Red styles may receive longer maceration and maturation in inert vessels or wood when this serves their structure and varietal expression.
The area’s wine history is connected with the ancient settlement of Lake Garda and with routes linking the Po Valley to the Alpine world. The present DOC carries this longstanding tradition forward, with particular emphasis on the historic place of Groppello on the Brescian shore of Lake Garda.
