Rosso Piceno DOC is a historic red-wine denomination of Marche, rooted in the hilly landscapes that run between the foothills of the Apennines and the Adriatic in the central and southern part of the region. Ridges, valleys and slopes with varied exposures create a broad range of local mesoclimates. Breezes from the sea temper summer warmth, while cooler currents from inland elevations encourage night-time cooling. Its soils are equally diverse, with clay, limestone, sand, marl and, in places, stony components contributing different expressions of structure, freshness and savoury character.
The blend is founded on Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Montepulciano brings deep colour, ripe dark-fruit character, tannic breadth and body, while Sangiovese contributes lift, acidity, floral nuances, cherry tones and a vibrant line through the palate. Other permitted red varieties may complete the blend within the denomination’s rules. Rosso Piceno Superiore follows a more closely defined composition, highlighting the balance between the two principal grapes.
Vineyards are generally planted on ventilated slopes. Training systems and canopy management are directed toward balanced vine growth, even ripening and healthy fruit. Harvest timing is determined according to site, variety and vintage, seeking to retain Sangiovese’s aromatic energy while allowing Montepulciano to reach full phenolic maturity.
In the cellar, red grapes are commonly destemmed and fermented on their skins. Fermentation temperatures and maceration length are adapted to the intended expression: gentler extraction can emphasize supple texture and fruit, while extended skin contact gives greater depth, colour and structure. Maturation may take place in inert vessels, large casks or smaller barrels, provided oak remains integrated with the fruit. Recognised as a DOC in 1968, Rosso Piceno brings together a long regional tradition in which the union of Sangiovese and Montepulciano has become a defining expression of the Piceno area.
