Serrapetrona DOC comes from the hilly inland sector of Marche, in an area set between the Chienti and Potenza valleys on the foothills of the Apennines. Vineyards occupy slopes with varied aspects and benefit from a continental climate shaped by warm summers, marked day-night temperature shifts, and cooler mountain air. These conditions encourage gradual ripening while retaining aromatic definition and acidity. Soils commonly combine clay, limestone, and sand, with marly and stony components in places; they contribute structure, earthy depth, and spice to the red wines.
The denomination is closely associated with Vernaccia Nera, a historic local black grape capable of giving deep colour, floral and spicy fragrances, and firm tannic character. Sangiovese and, according to the style and blend, Montepulciano and other permitted regional red grapes also play a role in the DOC. Sangiovese contributes freshness, cherry-like fruit, and linear acidity, while Montepulciano can add colour, fruit weight, and breadth. In the vineyard, Vernaccia Nera in particular requires attentive canopy management and careful observation of ripening, so that the fruit reaches full maturity while preserving its distinctive aromatic profile.
Serrapetrona DOC is principally expressed through still red wines, including Novello and Passito styles. The dry reds are made through fermentation on the skins, with maceration length and temperature adjusted to the grape variety, vintage conditions, and desired tannic profile. Sensitive maturation in inert vessels or wood may soften the texture without obscuring local varietal identity. For Passito wines, selected grapes are dried after harvest; the resulting concentration of sugars, acidity, and phenolic compounds creates a dense palate and notes of ripe and dried fruit.
The denomination belongs to a long-established mountain-influenced winegrowing tradition that has safeguarded Vernaccia Nera as a defining regional heritage. It complements Serrapetrona’s celebrated sparkling-wine identity with a range of still, place-specific red wine expressions.
