Trebbiano d’Abruzzo DOC is the historic white-wine denomination of Abruzzo, formally recognised in 1972. Its vineyards range from the plains near the Adriatic through rolling hills to the foothills of the Apennines. Maritime influence supplies light, breezes and moderating conditions, while elevation and cool nights in the interior help preserve acidity. Limestone- and clay-rich soils are especially important in the hill country, contributing structure and a mineral-tinged impression. The denomination’s broad range of sites gives rise to distinct expressions: lower, coastal locations can show more immediate fruit and subtle saline notes, while elevated slopes tend to deliver firmer acidity and more pronounced herbal detail.
The wine is based on Trebbiano Abruzzese, used on its own or together with Trebbiano Toscano; other permitted non-aromatic white varieties may complete the blend. Trebbiano Abruzzese is particularly valued for its capacity to retain tension while reaching full ripeness, combining citrus character, restrained fruit and tactile depth. Vines are traditionally trained both on the local pergola abruzzese and on contemporary wire-trained systems. Canopy management, aeration around the bunches and a well-timed harvest are central to protecting aromatic precision and natural freshness.
In the cellar, grapes are generally handled gently and fermented at controlled temperatures, often in stainless steel, to preserve purity and clarity. A short period on fine lees is common and can add breadth and a softer texture without obscuring the wine’s linear profile. Some producers favour extended lees ageing, and occasionally wood or carefully managed oxidative maturation, to develop greater complexity and longevity. Trebbiano d’Abruzzo typically combines straw-yellow colour with citrus, orchard fruit, wild herbs and floral tones, leading to a dry, fresh palate with a characteristically subtle almond-like and saline finish.
