Verdicchio di Matelica DOC comes from the inland Marche, in the upper Esino valley, a basin enclosed by the Apennines. In contrast with the region’s coastal wine areas, Matelica has a distinctly more continental climate. Cool nights, marked day-to-night temperature shifts and cold winters slow ripening and help the grapes retain freshness. Vineyards occupy slopes and elevated sites around the valley, where air circulation and carefully chosen exposures support healthy fruit. Soils of limestone, clay, marl and, in places, sandier deposits combine water retention with drainage, contributing tension, structure and a recognisable mineral character.
Verdicchio is the defining grape. An ancient central Italian white variety, it takes its name from the greenish cast of both berries and, often, young wines. In Matelica, the slower ripening cycle allows it to preserve vivid acidity, citrus definition and its distinctive gently bitter almond-like finish. Typical aromas include lemon, grapefruit, white flowers, fennel and aromatic herbs, alongside yellow apple, peach and stony nuances. With bottle development, the wines can gain notes of beeswax, dried herbs, honey and more complex nutty tones.
Vine growing is centred on controlled pruning, balanced canopy management and selective harvesting. The aim is complete but not excessive phenolic maturity while retaining natural acidity. Vinification is generally directed toward dry still wines, using gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation, most commonly in stainless steel. Ageing on fine lees is frequently used to build texture and depth without obscuring varietal precision. Oak may be employed with restraint when added breadth or complexity is sought, though purity and freshness remain central stylistic values. Sparkling interpretations are also possible. Recognised as a DOC in 1967, Verdicchio di Matelica reflects a longstanding local wine tradition and an inland expression of Verdicchio shaped by mountain influence, cool conditions and deliberate, measured cellar work.
