Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG comes from the inland heart of Marche, in the upper Esino valley around Matelica. The growing area occupies an elongated basin shaped by the Apennines, with conditions that differ markedly from the more maritime Verdicchio zones. Elevated sites, calcareous clay soils, and deposits of marl and sand favour gradual, even ripening. Warm daylight hours, cool nights, and the shelter of the surrounding mountain ranges preserve acidity, aromatic precision, and a distinctive mineral profile.
Verdicchio accounts for at least 85 percent of the blend. Limited proportions of other authorised, non-aromatic white varieties may complement it. In the vineyard, balanced ground cover, restrained vegetative growth, attentive canopy management, and selective harvesting are central to quality. Grapes are often picked at full physiological maturity while retaining the freshness that is fundamental to the character of Verdicchio.
Winemaking is generally based on gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation under protective conditions. Stainless steel is widely used to preserve fruit purity and the tension of the vintage. Depending on the producer’s approach, extended lees contact, partial maturation in large oak vessels, or a measured oxidative evolution may add breadth and complexity. The Riserva designation requires at least 18 months of ageing, including a minimum of six months in bottle. Over time, citrus, apple, and herbal nuances develop toward almond, fennel, beeswax, and a persistent saline-mineral note.
The DOCG status recognises Matelica’s long viticultural tradition, where Verdicchio has been cultivated for centuries. Riserva is an especially clear expression of the grape’s aptitude for structure and longevity in the continental, mountain-influenced interior of Marche. It combines the variety’s naturally firm acidity with depth, textural refinement, and a strongly site-driven identity.
