Vermentino di Gallura DOCG is the leading white-wine denomination of north-eastern Sardinia, within the historic territory of Gallura. Its landscape is shaped by granite ridges, weathered rock formations, cork oak woodland and the pervasive influence of the Mediterranean. Vines are often rooted in shallow, sandy soils derived from decomposed granite, with locally stonier sites and deposits containing clay. These freely draining, mineral-marked soils encourage deep rooting and contribute to the wine’s distinctive tension. The Mistral and maritime breezes maintain airflow, reduce humidity and promote slow, aromatic ripening. Bright, warm days and cooler nights at more elevated sites help retain the grapes’ natural freshness.
The denomination is founded on Vermentino, which must make up virtually all of the blend; only small proportions of other permitted white varieties may be included. In Gallura, Vermentino typically combines citrus, white flowers, Mediterranean herbs and ripe yellow-fruit notes with a frequently saline, mineral character. Its acidity remains lively, while ripening on dry granite-derived soils gives the palate substance and definition.
In the vineyard, site selection, open canopies and cultivation adapted to local water conditions are central to quality. Grapes are harvested when aromatic and phenolic development has reached balance. For the classic dry styles, fruit is generally handled gently and fermented at controlled cool temperatures in stainless steel, preserving clarity and fragrance. Depending on the intended expression, extended lees contact, partial fermentation or maturation in wood, and later harvesting can add depth and texture. The regulations also provide for sparkling, lightly sparkling, passito and late-harvest expressions. Vermentino cultivation has a long-established place in Gallura; the area was first recognised as a DOC and subsequently elevated to DOCG status.
