Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is produced exclusively within the municipality of Montepulciano, in southeastern Tuscany between the Valdichiana and Val d’Orcia. Its vineyards occupy gently rolling hills with varied exposures, where elevation and air circulation encourage slow, even ripening. The terroir is notably diverse, with Pleistocene and Pliocene deposits of clay, silt, sand, pebbles and fossil-bearing material, alongside calcareous components. These soils balance water retention and drainage, contributing to wines of firm yet refined tannins, bright acidity and earthy depth.
The leading grape is Prugnolo Gentile, the local name for Sangiovese, which must account for at least 70 percent of the blend. It may be complemented by other red varieties authorized in Tuscany, with Canaiolo Nero among the traditional historical companions. In Montepulciano, Prugnolo Gentile commonly expresses sour cherry, violet, dried herbs, tobacco and spice, developing balsamic and woodland nuances with bottle age.
Viticulture focuses on balanced vine growth, attentive canopy management and a carefully timed harvest of sound, fully ripened fruit. Vinification follows the red-wine method, with fermentation on the skins; temperature control, maceration length, and gentle punch-downs or pump-overs are adapted to the character of each vintage and vineyard site. Maturation is central to the denomination’s identity. The wine must age for at least two years, including a minimum of twelve months in wood. Riserva requires three years of ageing, with at least twelve months in wood and six months in bottle. Producers may employ large casks, smaller oak vessels, or both, seeking to shape texture and evolution while preserving Prugnolo Gentile’s character.
Montepulciano has a long recorded wine tradition. Its wines were esteemed during the Renaissance, while the term “Nobile” became established over time for the wine associated with the town’s prominent families. In 1980, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was among Italy’s first wines to receive DOCG status.
