Enodiversivity
Enodiversity n. f. [comp. of eno- and diversity]. – The variability in the number and types of wines produced in a specific area or worldwide.
The term “enodiversity” is not (yet) in the dictionary. It's a neologism we coined to express the core concept behind our research: the variability of wines produced within a given wine-growing area – whether it’s a single hill or an entire region.
The 3 factors of enodiversity
Grape biodiversity
Today, there are over 1000 grapevine varieties (vitis vinifera), the result of a selection process that began centuries ago and is still ongoing, aimed precisely at wine production.
Environmental conditions
The vine is sensitive to even the slightest changes in soil, exposure, water availability, temperature, and humidity, which can create differences in wine production even between neighboring vineyards.
Technical choices
The hundreds of combinations of methods and technologies for cultivation, processing, bottling, and storage directly impact the final product.
Applied Enodiversity
The concept of enodiversity is a knowledge tool with practical effects. Each wine region featured on Enologik is matched with a curated wine selection that represents its enodiversity, based on factors such as:
- Territorial morphology
- Native grape varieties
- Winemaking history of the region
- Production regulations of appellations
- Historical wine ratings from industry guides
On Enologik, the concept of enodiversity is expressed through wine search filters and wine maps, allowing users to explore the full extent of wine diversity.
