600 Grotte
600 Grotte is a winery based in Chiaromonte, in Basilicata, closely linked to the hilly landscape of the Pollino National Park and the village’s agricultural heritage. Its name evokes the ancient caves carved into the rock of the village, which were historically used for storing wine thanks to their naturally favourable temperature conditions. This connection between place, tradition and raw materials defines the winery’s identity, which has placed the Guarnaccino Nero di Chiaromonte at the heart of its work.
This indigenous grape variety, deeply rooted in the area, has undergone a process of recovery and varietal recognition, culminating in its inclusion in the national catalogue of vine varieties in 2013. Its promotion gives 600 Grotte a distinct role within the Lucanian wine scene: not only to showcase a local grape, but to help establish it as a distinct expression of the region.
The vineyards are set amidst the natural landscape of the inland hills, where viticulture coexists with the biodiversity of the Pollino and with a rural tradition that is still evident in the landscape. The winemaking approach prioritises the production of single-varietal Guarnaccino wines, with the aim of preserving the grape’s original character and translating it into wines with a strong sense of place. The result is a style centred on the identity of the grape variety, the freshness of the hilly environment and a contemporary interpretation of Chiaromonte’s winemaking tradition.
