Acquabona
Acquabona is a winery on the Island of Elba, in Tuscany, based in the village of the same name between Portoferraio and Porto Azzurro. Its identity stems from an island landscape where the vine is an integral part of the region’s agricultural and cultural history: gentle hills, the light of the sea, the Tyrrhenian breeze and red clay soils define a distinctive environment, capable of imparting a recognisable Mediterranean character to the wines. The estate traces its origins to a farmstead dating back to the early decades of the 18th century, and the name Acquabona derives from the presence of a freshwater spring – a precious resource in the island’s collective memory.
Work in the vineyard focuses on grape varieties linked to the traditions of Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago, such as Ansonica, Trebbiano and Aleatico, alongside Sangiovese, Syrah and Merlot. The production philosophy aims to highlight the distinctive character of the terroir through careful management of the raw materials, agricultural practices designed to control vine vigour, and a growing commitment to sustainability, with a gradual reduction in the use of broad-spectrum chemical treatments.
Acquabona’s wines strike a balance between local heritage and a contemporary interpretation of Elba. The whites seek freshness, brightness and Mediterranean aromas; the reds harmoniously express the ripeness of Sangiovese and complementary grape varieties; Aleatico retains its symbolic role as the island’s signature grape variety. The result is a consistent style, linked to the sea, the light and Elba’s long winemaking tradition.
