Antoniolo
Antoniolo is a historic winery in Gattinara, in Upper Piedmont, associated with one of the most distinctive expressions of Nebbiolo, traditionally known here as Spanna. The winery was founded after the Second World War and has developed in a region with a strong character, in the Vercelli hills at the foot of Monte Rosa, where the Gattinara DOCG designation focuses its identity on wines made predominantly from Nebbiolo. The producer’s profile is closely linked to its own vineyards situated in particularly well-suited areas, including historic plots such as Osso San Grato, San Francesco and Castelle, which are considered key to understanding the diverse characteristics of the region.
The area’s soil profile, characterised by volcanic substrates and mineral components, helps to define wines with a taut, deep and distinctive character. In the vineyard, the focus is on respecting the vines and the soil, with practices aimed at preserving the natural balance and the quality of the raw material. In the winery, a traditional approach prevails: spontaneous fermentation, the use of concrete tanks and prolonged ageing in large wooden casks accompany the Nebbiolo without forcing its expression.
Antoniolo’s style emphasises structure, austerity, finesse and a sense of the terroir. His wines interpret Gattinara with a clean, vertical profile, combining alpine vigour, mineral depth and an elegant tannic structure, whilst maintaining a strong connection to the winemaking heritage of Upper Piedmont.
