Assoviuno
Assoviuno is a Lombardy-based producer based in Berbenno di Valtellina, in the heart of the Maroggia sub-zone of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG. Its identity stems from its connection to a precise and distinctive style of mountain viticulture, where Nebbiolo – locally known as Chiavennasca – expresses the terraced slopes of the Rhaetian side with a refined, vertical and deeply terroir-driven profile. Established in 2000, the winery has focused its efforts on the rediscovery of the Maroggia cru, a historic area situated in the western part of the municipality and recognised as a sub-zone of the Valtellina Superiore DOCG since 2002. The vineyards are situated on steep slopes supported by dry stone walls, with rows arranged according to the gradient and loose-textured sandy loam soils. The natural environment plays a decisive role in shaping the style of the wines: the Rhaetian Alps shield the valley from cold northerly winds, whilst the Orobie and Adamello mountains block the southerly winds; the ‘breva’ breeze from Lake Como promotes aeration, vegetative balance and the health of the grapes. Alongside Nebbiolo, the presence of Valtellina red grape varieties such as Rossola, Merlina and Pignola reinforces the local character of the raw material. The winemaking approach prioritises showcasing the vineyard landscape and its historic plots, seeking to produce wines capable of expressing the alpine energy of Valtellina, the luminosity of the terraces and the agricultural heritage of Maroggia.
