Belisario
Belisario is a winery in Matelica with deep-rooted ties to Verdicchio di Matelica, a wine appellation originating in the Marche hinterland, along the Upper Esina Valley. Founded in 1971, it has built its identity on a direct relationship with vineyards situated in the immediate vicinity of the winery and spread across an inland hilly landscape, far from the influence of the sea. Here, the valley, running north to south, creates unique conditions for the ripening of Verdicchio: marked daily temperature variations, good sunlight, ventilation and a climate that combines continental influences with Mediterranean sunshine.
The Matelica region helps to produce white wines with a distinctive character, characterised by freshness, savouriness and a crisp aromatic profile. The limestone soils and well-exposed slopes encourage the grape variety to express itself clearly, whilst the management of the raw material is geared towards preserving the integrity, natural acidity and full ripeness of the grapes. Belisario interprets this terroir through a consistent technical approach, in which each vineyard is considered part of a specific winemaking project and the work in the cellar aims to highlight the distinct characteristics of each individual vineyard.
Alongside the central role played by Verdicchio, the focus on organic production reflects a commitment to more sustainable agricultural practices. The overall style emphasises balance, definition and a sense of place, offering an authentic reflection of the Upper Esina Valley and its role in the Marche region’s wine-growing tradition.
