Benito Ferrara
Benito Ferrara is a leading figure in Irpinia’s wine industry, with roots in Tufo, in the hamlet of San Paolo, an area of Campania traditionally associated with Greco wine. The producer’s identity stems from his connection with a hilly landscape ideally suited to viticulture, where winegrowing thrives at high altitudes, with favourable exposures and medium-textured soils. In the municipality of Tufo, Greco finds one of its most distinctive expressions: clay-limestone soils, rich in minerals and characterised by the area’s tuffaceous matrix, help to define crisp, savoury and deeply terroir-driven white wines. Alongside Tufo, the connection with Montemiletto highlights the presence of Aglianico, another key grape variety of Irpinia and inland Campania.
The winemaking approach brings out the best in the raw material through a clear understanding of the vineyard and the fruit. For the Greco, the winery’s production notes indicate autumn harvests, soft pressing, protection of the must from oxygen, clarification through natural sedimentation and ageing in stainless steel on the fine lees: choices that prioritise precision, aromatic integrity and a well-defined minerality. The style of the wines combines character and balance, with floral and fruity aromas, a dry and harmonious palate, and a typical almond-like finish that is characteristic of the Greco di Tufo tradition. This is how Benito Ferrara interprets the Irpinia region of Campania through wines that reflect their terroir, consistently reflecting the connection between grape variety, soil and the hilly landscape.
