Cantina Caldaro
Cantina Caldaro, also known as Cantina Kaltern, is a winery with deep roots on the shores of Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol, where the culture of winegrowing is closely linked to the landscape of the Oltradige region. In operation since 1900, it embodies a region shaped by the interplay of Alpine and Mediterranean influences: the cool currents from the north, the milder winds from the south and the lake’s luminosity all contribute to defining wines with a distinct character, capable of combining freshness, aromatic maturity and expressive precision.
Lake Caldaro is one of the historic landmarks of South Tyrolean viticulture and lends its name to a wine appellation deeply linked to the Schiava grape, also known here as Kalterersee. Around the lake, the red grape varieties most sensitive to heat ripen naturally, whilst the higher, windier slopes at the foot of the Mendola favour crisp, fragrant whites. The variety of soils – ranging from volcanic porphyry to limestone components, moraine deposits and soils with varying degrees of stone content – provides a complex foundation for different interpretations of the terroir.
The winemaking approach emphasises the work in the vineyard, care for the raw materials, and sustainability understood as the protection of Caldaro’s natural and cultural landscape. The wines reveal a distinct sense of place, balance and a dual character: the sunny character of the lake and the freshness of South Tyrol’s high altitudes.
