Cantina Terlano
Cantina Terlano is one of South Tyrol’s most recognisable historic institutions, established in 1893 in the village of Terlano, in the middle Adige valley between Bolzano and Merano. Its identity stems from a highly distinctive territory, to the extent that alongside the Alto Adige DOC designation, the term ‘Terlaner’ also appears, reflecting the area’s specific climatic and geological characteristics. The vineyards stretch across the slopes of Montezoccolo, on south- and south-west-facing hillsides where the mild influence from the south meets the cool air descending from the mountains. This interplay promotes full ripening, marked daily temperature variations and a particularly distinct aromatic profile.
The most distinctive feature of the terroir is the quartz porphyry of Bolzano: red volcanic rocks, sandy and loamy soils that are well-drained, rich in stone content and generally low in limestone. In this environment, the vines grow in a state of natural balance, producing wines characterised by tension, salinity and depth. Viticulture focuses on the careful management of individual plots, maintaining healthy vines and avoiding the use of herbicides, in line with a measured and soil-respecting approach to farming.
Cantina Terlano’s style is primarily associated with white wines, with Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as its flagship wines. Careful selection of the grapes, slow fermentation and ageing on fine lees underpin a philosophy centred on time: crisp, mineral-driven and long-lived wines, capable of combining alpine freshness, Mediterranean ripeness and a strong sense of place.
