Cantine del Notaio
Cantine del Notaio is a winery in the Vulture region of Basilicata that has built its identity around Aglianico del Vulture, the iconic grape variety of northern Basilicata and the quintessential expression of the slopes of the ancient volcano. Founded in 1998 with the aim of showcasing this grape in a contemporary light, it combines agricultural heritage, a focus on research and respect for a terroir characterised by a strong mineral character. The setting of Rionero in Vulture and the surrounding hills offers particularly distinctive natural conditions: volcanic soils, the presence of tuff, hot, dry summers, and significant daily temperature variations that support slow ripening and help preserve the wine’s freshness. In the vineyard, the stated approach is inspired by organic and biodynamic principles, with practices aimed at enhancing soil vitality, organic matter and the plant’s water balance. The raw material remains at the heart of the work, with Aglianico expressed through its structure, aromatic depth and territorial character. Ageing also contributes to the character of the wines: the ancient natural caves carved into the volcanic tuff offer stable conditions of temperature, humidity and ventilation, promoting steady and measured ageing. Cantine del Notaio’s style is characterised by a pursuit of intensity without excess, a firm yet progressive tannic structure, and an interpretation of the Vulture region that brings together volcanic energy, local tradition and oenological precision.
