Caravaglio
Caravaglio is a wine producer based in Salina, in the heart of the Aeolian archipelago, where viticulture takes on a distinctly island and volcanic character. The organic vineyards are spread across Salina, Lipari, Vulcano and Stromboli, in a landscape shaped by craters, lava flows, sea winds and stark natural contrasts. This setting gives the wines a distinct terroir, characterised by minerality, Mediterranean brightness and a briny edge.
Work in the vineyard focuses on native grape varieties and the archipelago’s traditional cultivars, with particular attention paid to Malvasia di Lipari and Corinto Nero. The grapes come from plots situated in prime wine-growing areas, often on sandy and volcanic soils, where organic farming and respect for the natural balance are an integral part of the estate’s identity. The presence of historic vineyards and ungrafted vines reinforces the link with an Aeolian agricultural tradition that has been preserved without becoming trapped in a nostalgic interpretation.
The style of the wines tends to emphasise aromatic purity, freshness and expressive precision. Malvasia, produced both in accordance with the Malvasia delle Lipari DOC designation and in contemporary dry styles, becomes the main vehicle for conveying the islands’ volcanic and maritime origins. Caravaglio thus embodies a terroir-driven approach to viticulture, recognisable by its harmony with the landscape and a production philosophy geared towards expressing, with restraint, the distinctive character of the Aeolian Islands.
