Cataldi Madonna
Cataldi Madonna is an Abruzzo-based producer with deep ties to Ofena, in the mountainous region around L’Aquila at the foot of the Gran Sasso. The winery was founded in 1920 and, over time, has developed a distinct identity: to present the Ofena plateau as a region with its own distinct character within the wider landscape of Abruzzo wine. This area, known as the ‘Forno d’Abruzzo’, is a small natural amphitheatre set within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, where the heat of the day meets the cool air descending from the mountains, fostering significant temperature variations and a ripening process that preserves energy, vitality, structure and aromatic profile.
The vineyards are situated in the municipality of Ofena, at hilltop and foothill altitudes, and are dedicated to indigenous and traditional grape varieties such as Montepulciano, Pecorino and Trebbiano. The viticultural approach aims to preserve the varietal character of the grapes, with particular attention paid to vegetative balance and canopy management. In the winery, the philosophy remains consistent with the raw material: preserving freshness, flavour and vigour, whilst ensuring the wines remain true to the character of the terroir.
The result is a crisp, terroir-driven style, characterised by the mountainous terrain of inland Abruzzo. Cataldi Madonna has helped to promote Ofena’s winemaking heritage and to reinforce the role of Pecorino and other Abruzzo grape varieties, presenting them in a precise, dynamic and distinctive manner.
