Col d'Orcia
Col d’Orcia is a long-established producer based in Montalcino, Tuscany, with direct links to the hill overlooking the River Orcia, on the south-western edge of the Brunello di Montalcino region. Its identity stems from a landscape on the border between Montalcino and the Val d’Orcia, where viticulture forms part of an ancient and distinctive agricultural landscape, characterised by favourable exposures, loose soils that are low in clay and rich in limestone, frequent breezes and a Mediterranean climate.
Sangiovese is the estate’s flagship variety and ripens gradually on the southern slopes, aided by many hours of sunshine and the natural protection afforded by Monte Amiata. This balance gives rise to wines characterised by structure, elegance and a distinct sense of place, with a classic profile that emphasises the depth of the fruit, the tannic structure and the grape variety’s ability to reflect its terroir.
Since 2010, Col d’Orcia has based its entire agricultural management on organic practices, establishing its estate as an ‘organic island’ in Montalcino; this environmental commitment is further reinforced by its Equalitas Sustainable Winery certification. In the winery, the approach remains consistent with this vision: careful selection of grapes, hand-harvesting, controlled fermentation and ageing in Slavonian and French oak, with timing and containers tailored to the characteristics of each batch. Research into Sangiovese, including clonal selection, confirms the estate’s active role in the qualitative development of the Montalcino region.
