Coutandin
Coutandin is a Piedmontese producer with links to the Pinerolo area, a foothill region near Turin where viticulture retains a strong sense of identity and a mountainous character. The vineyards are situated between Perosa Argentina and Pomaretto, at the heart of the Ramìe sub-zone of the Pinerolese DOC, on steep, terraced slopes that require careful and continuous manual tending. Here, the vines grow in a bright, breezy Alpine setting, with steep slopes, rocky and marly soils, and conditions that give the wines a distinct terroir character.
Coutandin’s winemaking identity stems from the restoration of neglected vineyards and the preservation of historic local grape varieties such as Avanà, Avarengo, Chatus and Becuet, often blended with Barbera in keeping with the Ramìe tradition. Cultivation follows a natural approach that respects the balance between the vine, the soil and biodiversity, making the most of raw materials harvested at full ripeness and processed with minimal intervention.
In the cellar, a restrained and consistent approach prevails: fermentation in stainless steel, prolonged ageing and bottling without fining or filtration – choices designed to preserve the wines’ aromatic integrity, texture and authentic expression. The wines thus reveal the most authentic character of the Pinerolo region: mountain reds with a spicy, fruity and deep profile, underpinned by structure, freshness and an elegant rusticity that accurately reflects the landscape from which they originate.
