Davide Calvi
Davide Calvi is a Lombardy-based winery based in Castana, in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese region, with a history of wine-growing that the estate’s records trace back eleven generations. Its identity stems from a close connection with the hills of the Stradella promontory, an area where the favourable climate, its location along the 45th parallel and the variety of soils all contribute to defining wines with a strong sense of place. Here, clay, sandstone and gravel alternate across micro-zones that differ in terms of aspect, ventilation and slope, bringing out the distinct character of each individual vineyard.
A key site is the Montarzolo vineyard, in the municipality of Castana, situated in the historic Buttafuoco Storico area. The sandstone subsoil, the poor soil and the limited water supply encourage deep root systems and a clear expression of the terroir, entrusted to the traditional grape varieties Croatina, Barbera, Uva Rara and Ughetta di Canneto. Vineyard management prioritises environmental balance and the well-being of the vines: grass cover between the rows to combat erosion, a focus on natural biodiversity, the absence of chemical fertilisers and a reduction in interventions in the vineyard. The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified using spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, in a winemaking philosophy that prioritises the raw material over cellar techniques. The result is distinctive wines, rooted in the tradition of the Oltrepò Pavese region and capable of expressing the depth, structure and authenticity of the hilly landscape.
