Didier Gerbelle
Didier Gerbelle is a winemaker from the Aosta Valley based in Aymavilles, in the heart of the Aosta Valley wine-growing region. His identity is rooted in an authentic mountain setting, between the municipalities of Aymavilles and Villeneuve, where the vines are set against an alpine landscape characterised by slopes, sunny exposures and meticulous cultivation. The relevant designation is Valle d’Aosta or Vallée d’Aoste DOC, a region boasting a particularly rich ampelographic heritage linked to the region’s ‘heroic’ viticulture.
The vineyards are cultivated on poor, stony soils, conditions that favour wines that are unpretentious, concentrated and deeply rooted in their terroir. The vines are trained using the espalier system with simple Guyot pruning, alongside a management approach focused on precision and an understanding of the individual grape varieties. The focus is primarily on grape varieties deeply rooted in the local terroir, such as Petit Rouge, Cornalin, Premetta and Fumin, alongside white grapes such as Pinot Grigio and aromatic Traminer, which are capable of expressing the freshest and most fragrant aspects of the Alpine climate.
The winemaking philosophy favours a hands-on approach, from vineyard management to winemaking, with the aim of preserving varietal purity and terroir character. The wines are characterised by taut, vertical and fragrant profiles, with a distinct aromatic component and a well-balanced structure. The result is a consistent expression of the central Aosta Valley, where altitude, stony soil and winemaking tradition combine to create a recognisable, understated and deeply terroir-driven style.
