Ferrando
Ferrando is a historic winery in the Canavese region of northern Piedmont, linked to Ivrea and a border area where viticulture intertwines with the Aosta Valley and the Alpine landscape. Founded in 1890, it has built its identity primarily around Carema – a mountain-style interpretation of Nebbiolo first produced in the mid-20th century – and Erbaluce di Caluso, the white grape variety that symbolises the Canavese region. The producer’s profile is deeply rooted in challenging yet distinctive vineyards: in Carema, the grapes grow on terraced slopes, amongst morainic rocks, dry stone walls and traditional pergolas supported by stone pillars – elements that accumulate heat during the day and release it during the cooler hours. It is a challenging viticultural environment, characterised by high altitudes, significant temperature fluctuations and glacial soils, which give rise to wines that are taut, refined and complex. The winemaking approach seems geared towards preserving the expression of the local grape varieties rather than imposing a uniform style upon them: Carema’s Nebbiolo is expressed in an elegant, structured and vertical style, whilst the Erbaluce highlights freshness, precision and natural versatility. Ferrando thus embodies a cultural continuity within the Canavese wine-growing region, with wines that reflect a territory which is marginal only in appearance, yet endowed with a strong pedoclimatic identity and a highly recognisable technical tradition.
