Formiconi
Formiconi is a winery in Lazio with direct links to the Affile area, in the Rome region where Cesanese finds one of its most distinctive expressions. The business was founded in the early 2000s, building on a family tradition already deeply rooted in the production of this grape variety, with the aim of ensuring the continued production of a local red wine that has historically been grown and vinified in the area. At the heart of its production is Cesanese di Affile, a native variety that defines the character of the appellation and guides the winery’s agronomic and stylistic choices.
The vineyards are situated in a high-altitude hilly landscape, in the Capozzano area of Affile, at around 600 metres above sea level. The favourable aspect, the daily temperature variations and the presence of limestone and marl soils all contribute to a ripening process that preserves aromatic finesse, balance and depth. The winemaking approach prioritises care for the raw material, with manual harvesting and careful selection of the grapes, whilst in the cellar, vinification seeks a balance between traditional methods and technical precision.
Formiconi’s wines offer an intense yet restrained interpretation of Cesanese di Affile: ripe fruit, structure, smoothness and well-balanced tannins coexist with a recognisable terroir character. The result is a producer deeply rooted in inland Lazio, capable of showcasing a historic grape variety through wines that maintain consistency, identity and a connection to their native landscape.
