Frus
Frus is a wine project from Friuli Venezia Giulia linked to the hilly area of Buttrio in Monte, in the heart of the Colli Orientali del Friuli. In Friulian, the name evokes the idea of ‘son’ and ‘fruit’, a reference that is consistent with a journey that began in 2015 to give a voice to mature vineyards and to raw materials interpreted in a simple, sustainable and natural way. The winemaking identity is based on selected plots in the Buttrio area, where the vineyards’ aspect and the soil and climate conditions of the Colli Orientali allow for a clear expression of the grape varieties and the nuances of the terroir.
The vineyard landscape is that of the eastern hills of the province of Udine, shaped by hills that are uniform in terms of geological origin and climate. Here, the marl and sandstone soils – locally known as ‘ponca’ – combine with the shelter provided by the Julian Alps and the breezes from the Adriatic, creating conditions particularly suited to viticulture. Frus works with grape varieties that are part of Friuli’s winemaking heritage, including Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Tazzelenghe, using winemaking techniques designed to allow the character of the grape and the terroir to shine through. The result is a direct, terroir-driven style, in which the pursuit of naturalness is not a secondary consideration but the very heart of a distinctive production, rooted in the agricultural vitality of the Colli Orientali and their tradition of indigenous grape varieties.
