Giovanni Almondo
Giovanni Almondo is a winery deeply rooted in the Roero region of Piedmont, with its origins in Montà and the Vittori wine-growing heartland, an area historically renowned for Arneis. The producer’s identity stems from its close relationship with the hills and their varied soils, where sand, limestone, silt and clay combine in different proportions and determine the grapes’ intended use: the higher, sandier plots bring out the finesse of Arneis, whilst the more limestone- and clay-rich soils enhance the expression of the red grapes, particularly Nebbiolo.
Here, the Roero emerges as a region of subtle contrasts: steep slopes, soils of marine origin and a hilly climate that favours wines that are taut, fragrant and with a distinct mineral character. An analysis of the vineyards – including sites such as Bricco delle Ciliegie, Burigot and Bric Valdiana – highlights the importance of the quality of the raw material and the harmony between grape variety, aspect and soil composition.
In the cellar, the approach combines traditional sensibility with technical control. For the white wines, managing freshness is key, including by controlling the temperature of the grapes before pressing, whilst for the Nebbiolo, the use of large oak barrels maintains a link with a classic vision of the Roero. The result is wines that are recognisable for their aromatic clarity, savouriness and balance, capable of conveying the character of Montà without stylistic excess.
