Girlan
Girlan is a winery based in Cornaiano, in the Oltradige region of South Tyrol, within a wine-growing landscape situated between Bolzano, San Michele and the Adige Valley. Its identity stems from the interplay between alpine protection and southern exposure: the mountains shield the vineyards from cold winds, whilst the valley fosters milder, Mediterranean-style influences. The marked daily temperature variations, particularly in autumn, help to define the wines’ distinct aromas, freshness and potential for development.
The Girlan area is characterised by sunny slopes and gravelly, clayey soils, often associated with substrates of volcanic origin. In this context, grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Schiava, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Gewürztraminer come into their own, vinified with a focus on expressing the character of the terroir rather than solely on varietal characteristics. The winery works on the concept of terroir as a synthesis of soil, climate, altitude, agricultural tradition and precision in the selection of sites, in line with the growing emphasis on South Tyrolean geographical units.
The agronomic approach focuses on soil care and sustainability: grass cover and green manure, organic compost, the avoidance of mineral fertilisers, drip irrigation and measured plant protection all contribute to preserving the balance and vitality of the vineyards. In the winery, the pursuit of energy efficiency and natural ageing conditions complements a style that emphasises clear structure, mineral freshness, aromatic precision and an authentic expression of South Tyrol.
