Girolamo Russo
Girolamo Russo is a winemaker from the Etna region based in Passopisciaro, on the northern slope of the volcano, in one of the areas most emblematic of the resurgence in the quality of Etna wines. His identity stems from his direct connection with a high-hill landscape, amidst ancient lava flows, ash, volcanic rocks and scoria shaped by eruptions from different eras. Here, the vineyard plots take on distinct characteristics: older or younger soils, the presence of clay, exposed bedrock, ventilation and altitudes ranging from around 650 to 800 metres all contribute to defining recognisable flavour profiles.
The vines are cultivated using organic methods and traditional practices are maintained, with old bush-trained vines alongside row-trained vines, and all work carried out by hand. At harvest time, the grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately according to the specific vineyard block from which they come, a choice that prioritises an understanding of the terroir over stylistic uniformity.
The signature grape varieties are those of Mount Etna: Nerello Mascalese, often paired with Nerello Cappuccio, and Carricante, alongside other indigenous white grape varieties. The wines express a distinct volcanic character, characterised by energy, mineral tension, aromatic depth and fine tannins. The overall approach prioritises balance, transparency and a connection to the terroir, conveying a precise picture of the northern slope of Mount Etna and its geological complexity.
