La Piana
La Piana is a wine-producing estate on the island of Capraia, in the province of Livorno, deeply rooted in the agricultural landscape of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Its identity stems from the restoration of land historically linked to the area of the former Penal Colony and the Piano di Santo Stefano, where the vine has once again found its place within an island environment characterised by Mediterranean scrub, terraces, dry stone walls and strong sea exposure.
Capraia’s environment is key to understanding the character of its wines: the island, of volcanic origin, combines mineral soils, constant breezes, intense sunlight and proximity to the sea. Against this backdrop, La Piana cultivates grape varieties well suited to Mediterranean and island viticulture, including Aleatico, Vermentino, Ansonica, Ciliegiolo, Colorino and Sangiovese, with a farming approach focused on organic cultivation and the enhancement of the raw material.
The winemaking process prioritises a distinctive expression of the terroir rather than a standardised oenological model. Aleatico is one of the winery’s most iconic wines, crafted in ways that highlight its aromatic character, freshness and connection to the island’s traditions; the white wines, on the other hand, reflect the salty, luminous character of the maritime environment. Overall, La Piana helps to restore agricultural continuity to a fragile and precious territory, bringing to the glass an insular, Mediterranean and deeply regional expression of Tuscany.
