Le Casematte
Le Casematte is a Sicilian winery based in Faro Superiore, in the hills north of Messina, in a spot where the vines look out over the Strait and engage in a direct dialogue with the sea. Its profile is particularly linked to the Faro DOC designation, a historic expression of the Messina region, which is interpreted here through native grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera and Nero d’Avola. The producer’s identity stems from a desire to showcase a small yet highly distinctive area, where local winemaking tradition meets a contemporary approach to working with the raw materials.
The vineyards are situated in a hilly landscape influenced by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas: the winds that converge over the Strait contribute to a breezy microclimate and significant daily temperature variations, which are beneficial for balanced ripening even during Sicilian summers. The use of espalier and bush-trained training systems reflects traditional local practices, whilst in the winery the approach prioritises precision, moderation and respect for the varietal character.
The wines’ style emphasises elegance, Mediterranean vigour and aromatic definition, with reds that combine fruit, notes of Mediterranean scrub, spice and a fine tannic structure. Le Casematte thus represents a distinct voice from Faro, dedicated to expressing the brightness, breeziness and natural complexity of the far north-east of Sicily.
