Luigi Maffini
Luigi Maffini is a producer from Campania with close ties to Cilento, an area in the province of Salerno where viticulture blends with a Mediterranean landscape of hills, scrubland, woodland and proximity to the sea. The winery’s identity is built around two complementary territorial centres: Castellabate, on the coast behind Punta Licosa, and Giungano with Trentinara, in the hilly hinterland not far from Paestum. This dual foundation allows one to understand Cilento through distinct natural contrasts, including maritime influences, wind patterns, varying hill altitudes and soils that differ in composition and texture.
In the Giungano and Trentinara vineyards, clay-limestone soils with a high proportion of coarse material predominate, situated at altitudes that promote a balance between ripeness and freshness. In Castellabate, by contrast, the proximity to the sea results in sandy-loamy soils with clayey components, which lend the grapes a more briny and Mediterranean character. Fiano and Aglianico are the key grape varieties in this interpretation, chosen to showcase a less obvious but strongly distinctive side of southern Campania.
The wines’ style focuses on precision, territorial distinctiveness and expressive depth. The Fiano is celebrated for its ability to combine structure, tension and aromatic complexity, whilst the Aglianico conveys the character of the Cilento region through fruit, texture and balance. The winemaking approach prioritises a clear understanding of the vineyard and the landscape, with wines that maintain a consistent connection to the soils, climate and indigenous grape varieties.
