Lupi
Lupi is a historic winery in western Liguria, based in Pieve di Teco, in the Imperia hinterland, in an area where the Riviera meets the Ligurian Alps. Its character stems from the interplay between the hills, the influence of the sea and the agricultural traditions of the Upper Arroscia Valley, a setting in which viticulture retains a strong sense of identity linked to local grape varieties. The winery is primarily associated with promoting Ligurian wine appellations and exploring the region’s indigenous grape varieties, with a particular focus on Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese and Ormeasco di Pornassio.
The winemaking history that began in the 1960s has given Lupi a distinctive role in the wine culture of the Ponente region. A distinctive feature is the focus on Pigato, not only as a fresh, regional white wine, but also as a wine capable of greater depth and development, through ageing choices designed to bring out its structure, complexity and length on the palate. Alongside the whites, the Ormeasco reflects the innermost, mountainous side of Liguria, where the vineyard-covered landscape is characterised by higher altitudes, greater temperature variations and a harsher environment than that of the coast.
The overall style favours wines rooted in local grapes, with a distinct territorial character: Mediterranean aromas, savoury intensity, balanced aromas and a natural harmony between the hinterland and the sea. Lupi thus represents one of the most significant expressions of western Liguria, capable of maintaining continuity with tradition whilst bringing a contemporary focus to the historic grape varieties of the Ponente region.
