Marisa Cuomo
Cantine Marisa Cuomo is one of the most recognisable examples of viticulture in Furore, in the Campania section of the Amalfi Coast. Its vineyard landscape is set amongst steep slopes and dolomitic-limestone cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, where the vines are often trained on pergolas and manual labour is a natural necessity rather than a technical choice. Sun, sea breezes and steep slopes create an extreme environment, imbuing the wines with a distinct Mediterranean character, characterised by freshness, savouriness and aromatic intensity.
The winery’s work forms part of the Costa d’Amalfi DOC, with particularly close ties to the Furore sub-region. The promotion of local and historic grape varieties is central: Falanghina, Biancolella, Fenile, Ginestra, Ripoli, Piedirosso and Aglianico make up a viticultural heritage that reflects the complexity of the Amalfi Coast and its ability to preserve rare grapes in challenging conditions. In winemaking, the approach combines a focus on the raw material, a quest for freshness and the measured use of modern techniques, with controlled fermentations and ageing processes designed to respect the character of the grapes.
The result is wines with a distinct and terroir-driven profile, in which the maritime character interacts with the richness of the fruit and the mineral depth of the rock. The winery thus offers a coherent interpretation of Amalfi’s ‘heroic’ viticulture, capable of transforming a vertical landscape into wines with an authentic and instantly recognisable character.
