Producers/ Maurizio Alongi
Maurizio Alongi
Maurizio Alongi is a Tuscan wine producer based in Gaiole in Chianti, in the eastern part of the Chianti Classico region. His identity is rooted in Barbischio, along the ridge of the Chianti Hills, where the Poggio di Barbischio and Sabbie di Barbischio vineyards are set within a high, breezy landscape surrounded by woodland. This natural setting helps to create a sheltered microclimate, with significant daily temperature variations and a refreshing coolness that are vital for the full expression of Sangiovese.
The producer’s profile is closely linked to an understanding of the soil. The Macigno formation, comprising sandstone, sand and well-draining components, gives rise to wines characterised more by finesse than by concentration, underpinned by vigour, a structured tannic profile and aromatic clarity. Alongside Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Canaiolo are used in complementary proportions, in keeping with a classic, terroir-driven Chianti approach.
In the winery, the approach prioritises precision and respect for the raw material: hand-harvested grapes, destemming, fermentation in stainless steel, manual pumping over and ageing in French oak tonneaux, followed by a period of rest in the bottle. The result is a distinctive style, centred on red fruit, floral notes, subtle spices, freshness and lively tannins. Maurizio Alongi’s wines tell the story of a simple, austere, hilly Tuscany, where the structure of Chianti Classico meets the sandy finesse of Barbischio.
