Muri Gries
Muri Gries is a convent winery in Bolzano, with deep roots in the Gries neighbourhood and the winemaking tradition of South Tyrol. Its identity stems from the combination of a long monastic heritage and a contemporary interpretation of the local terroir, with a particular focus on Lagrein, a native grape variety that finds one of its most expressive expressions here. The monastery’s vineyards and those situated around Bolzano benefit from the city’s sunny basin, sandy and gravelly alluvial soils and, in the most promising plots, the presence of quartz porphyry: conditions that promote ripeness, depth and a distinct terroir character.
Work in the vineyard follows the rhythm of nature and aims to bring out the distinctive character of the raw material, including through the selection of old vines and a site-specific winemaking approach that highlights the differences between the various plots. In the cellar, modern technology and tradition coexist in harmony: stainless steel is used to preserve precision and freshness, whilst oak accompanies the development of the reds without overpowering their character.
Muri Gries’s style is characterised by crisp, linear and distinctive wines, in which Lagrein plays a central role. The wines are both robust and elegant, with a profile that combines structure, aromatic depth and a connection to the Bolzano landscape, offering an authentic expression of South Tyrol’s most historic and indigenous character.
